The Expert Witness Institute has applied for registration of a branch in Singapore. It held its inaugural seminar there on “The Role of an Expert in Dispute Resolution” on 18 September. The event was hosted by Professor Leslie Chew, Dean of Law at Singapore University of Social Sciences; Sir Martin Spencer, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the EWI, and Sir Vivian Ramsey, President of the intended branch, gave welcome addresses; the key note address was given by guest-of-honour the Honourable Justice Quentin Loh of the Supreme Court in Singapore; Thomas Walford, Chan Leng Sun, Chris Easton and John Gibson discussed issues; and some 50 experts attended including Andrew as a Founding Member of the intended branch having been a member in the UK since 2004.
The annual conference of the EWI then took place in London on 27 September where there was widespread endorsement of the Singapore initiative.
The mission of the EWI in Asia is to extend its training for experts in report writing, how to give evidence in person and how to be cross examined; to provide accreditation; and to help instructing counsel find appropriate experts. All are much needed in the region.
